INTER-HOUSE AND SPORTS COMPETITIONS

The 38th Annual Inter-House Sport Competition of Government Secondary School, Minna has ended with MINNA HOUSE emerging the over all winner of this year’s edition of the competition.

MINNA HOUSE pulled 132 points to beat five other Houses in all the events completed for during the one week competition, which ended Wednesday 10th June, 2009.

ZUNGERU HOUSE came 2nd with 126 points while PAIKO HOUSE took 3rd position, scoring 117 points. The 4th position went to ABUJA HOUSE that recorded 102 points with BIDA HOUSE emerging 5th with 92 points while the 6th position went to KUTA HOUSE with 74 points.

Sporting events competed for include 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1x400m, 4x400m metres relay for both Junior, Intermediate and Senior. Others include Long jump, High jump and Shot put for both Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels.

In the 4x400 School invitational relay race for boys and girls, Government Day Secondary School, Minna emerged 1st , with Police Secondary School winning 2nd place while Zarumai Model Secondary School bagged 3rd.

In the girls category, Niger Baptist Secondary School won 1st with Police Secondary School taking 2nd while the 3rd position went to Government Day Secondary School, Minna.

The Principal of GSS Minna, Rev. Fr. J.D.O’Connell while addressing students of the college and invited guest at the end of the competition, said the annual inter-house sports competition organized by his management was part of the school annual programme with one week dedicated to athletics for students to display their talents.

Fr. O’Connell disclosed further that the one week break was equally used as an avenue for staff and students to work together in organizing the school programmes, pointing out that the school has an obligation to give students the opportunity to become aware of their talents.

The Principal added that apart from organizing the annual inter-house competition, the school also engaged in other extra curricular activities but attributed its short coming in carrying out sport activities to his expectation to lack of funds and thanked the Old Students of the school and Parent Teacher’s Association (PTA) for all their support to the school.

Also speaking at the occasion, the guest of honour, Ambassador Zubairu Dada, congratulated the principal and the entire staff of the school for the successful and peaceful conduct of the annual inter-house competition.

Ambassador Dada, an Old student of the school, commended all the student who participated in the competition and called on the losers to pick courage and work hard by preparing themselves ahead of the next edition of the competition and pledged to assist the student where necessary.

Highlights of the ceremony were presentation of gifts and pirzes to the winners.
